Play golf, win prizes, help save homeless animals

Jake was rescued by the PAL and now has a great home. He's hoping that people will tee off to help other abandoned pets by registering for the PAL's first annual golf outing.

On Friday, May 9, golfers can enjoy a day of golf at the Bear Brook Golf Club on Route 94 in Newton. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and participants will have the opportunity to win prizes. But, perhaps the biggest winners of the day will be the many abandoned and neglected cats and dogs who will benefit from the proceeds of the outing.
This is the first golf outing sponsored by the Pet Adoption League, PAL, of Hackettstown. The money will be used to provide veterinary medical care to pets that it takes in, thereby giving those animals a chance to live and find a loving forever home.
The fee for the outing is $150 per person. Individuals and foursomes can sign up. If individuals sign-up, the PAL will be happy to put them into foursomes.
Bear Brook Golf Club has a semi-private 18-hole championship golf course and a dining facility. There, before teeing off, players will be served a continental breakfast including danish, toast, bagels, butter, cream cheese, jam and assorted spreads, toast, coffee and orange juice. Lunch will also be served at the club and will include sausage and peppers, stuffed shells or ziti, potato salad, macaroni salad, draft beer and dessert.
There’s a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Golfers will receive a goodie bag and the use of a golf cart. The bags will contain a sleeve of Ti-tlelist golf balls, golf tees, ball markers, and more.
According to Debbie Severud, coordinator of the event, “We will award prizes for the following: Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, and Lowest Score. We will also award a special prize for the Highest Score.”
“We are still collecting prizes, and will continue to do so up to the week of the tournament. The prizes we have so far include: An Izzo Promo Legend Golf Bag, a Bag Boy Cart, a Giants poster of the spectacular catch by Eli Manning and David Tyree (signed by both players), an Official Yankee logo putter, a Dockers Travel Suitcase on wheels, Callaway golf cap and visors, golf books, prac-tice balls, and more than $500 worth of gift certificates to restaurants, fitness clubs, and other businesses,” Severud added.
Again, not only will golfers benefit by having a great day on the links, but so will the many animals that come to the PAL each year in need of medical treatment before they can be adopted. Like many animal rescues, the PAL has seen donations go down, but the need continues to rise. The monies raised will help to pay for care for animals like Harley.
“One of our volunteers received a call last Sunday from a woman who had adopted a cat from us years ago,” explains Severud, “She lives in an apartment complex that is cracking down on people feeding stray cats. She had seen a sick cat lying on her neigh-bor’s steps the day before. But on Sunday, he was lying on her steps and was so matted and thin that she was afraid he was dead. PAL volunteer Emily went to the apartment and brought this cat she named “Harley”, directly to the vet. Harley was so matted that he couldn't really move and so emaciated that he didn't have much time left. After Harley was stabilized, it was determined through blood work that he has a condition called hyperthyroidism. This is a life-threatening problem if left untreated.  It causes an extremely rapid heart rate and weight loss, among other symptoms. Harley also needed teeth extracted.  He is a very sweet and affectionate cat and is feeling much better now after receiving the thyroid medicine he will need for the rest of his life and being shaved.”
So, help animals like Harley, while enjoying a day of golf at the Bear Brook Golf Club.
