20-Year-Old Motorcyclist Dies After DPS Pursuit on Highway 290 Near Manor
Javan O. Jackson, 20, died after his motorcycle crashed following a pursuit by a Texas DPS trooper on US 290. The trooper lost sight of the motorcycle and terminated the pursuit. Shortly after, the crashed motorcycle was found at the intersection. Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin’s 9th fatal crash of 2026.

59-Year-Old Man Killed After Van Collides With Parked Trailer in North Austin
Ezequiel Diaz Lopez, 59, was killed at approximately 7:50 a.m. when his van collided with a parked trailer on the west curb. He was the sole occupant and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Austin’s 8th fatal crash of 2026.

Drunk Driver Crashes Into Pedestrians Outside Raising Cane’s Near UT Austin on Halloween Weekend – Five Injured, Lawsuit Filed
Antonia G. Garcia Rios, 21, was arrested after her Ford F-150 veered out of the drive-thru lane and onto the sidewalk around 2:25 a.m., striking five pedestrians including UT student Srivaishnavi Vijay, who suffered a massive brain injury requiring removal of part of her skull. Three people were in critical condition. Rios was charged with two counts of intoxication assault. A lawsuit was filed against Rios and Raising Cane’s for lack of protective bollards.

LANDMARK CASE: 18-Vehicle Pileup on I-35 Kills 5, Injures Many – March 2025
An 18-vehicle pileup on I-35 in north Austin killed 5 people and shut down the interstate for nearly 14 hours. The NTSB opened an investigation. The truck driver, Solomun Weldekeal-Araya, 37, was initially held on $200K bond per charge for intoxication manslaughter, but toxicology found no drugs or alcohol. His bond was reduced to $1,000 per charge. Among the victims was a mother of 11 children. Lawsuits have been filed against Amazon (the trucking company’s customer). The crash caused a diesel spill and debris field spanning 1/10 of a mile.
